Welcome to Edmonton Castle Downs

During the oil-driven economic boom of the 70’s, Edmonton expanded its boundaries to accommodate a steady population growth. In 1971, The City of Edmonton annexed the entire Castle Downs area. The Castle Downs Outline Plan was approved in 1973 and development of the neighborhoods began soon after. The developer, Genstar, named the original neighborhoods of Castle Downs after famous castles from Europe.

Castle Downs lies north and west of the former CFB Griesbach Edmonton. It’s neighbourhoods lie west of 97 Street and north of 137 Avenue. Because of its relatively recent addition to the city proper, having been built within the past 25 years, developers arranged for extensive parkland and man-made lakes. Beaumaris Lake is surrounded by parks, walkways and viewpoints that create a focal point for the neighbourhood. Castle Downs also includes, among others, the neighbourhoods of Baranow, Caernarvon and Carlisle as well as Dunluce, Lorelei and Baturyn which feature homes from $5,000 to $190,000 and condos from $50,000.

Castle Downs has 4 public elementary schools, 1 public junior high school, and 5 Catholic elementary schools. Today, the high schools for both school boards are a significant drive or bus ride away.  There is also a well-equipped public library in the middle of the community at Lakeside Landing.

Shopping in the area includes the Lakeside Landing Shopping Centre located near the geographical center of the area. There are two shopping malls in the community’s southeast near 127 Avenue & 97 Street: Northgate Shopping Centre and the North Town Mall. There are also clusters of conveniently located shops along both 137 Avenue and 97 Street.

Castle Downs has a variety of impressive recreational facilities. Beaumaris Lake is a popular venue for walking, biking and rollerblading. The Castle Downs Recreation Centre has 2 ice arenas as well as a wonderful water-spray park, which may expand to include a skateboard park, behind the facility. The Castle Downs YMCA, at 153 Avenue & Castle Downs Road (next to the Recreation Centre), includes a pool, gymnasium and exercise room. To the southwest is the Knights of Columbus Sports Complex that also has an ice arena. You’ll also find a pair of golf courses along 137th Avenue just west of St. Albert Trail.
